Bacon Donut Challenge

Bacon Donut Challenge
November 23, 2015

Bacon with donuts! Say what? What a perfect combination. Usually, bacon donuts are paired with a maple glaze which makes them tasted like pancakes with maple syrup and a side of bacon, all in one mouthful. Only the donuts are even better. I first heard of bacon donuts when I lived in Chicago. I made it my mission to find and eat as many different varieties as possible. Since I was traveling from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine via Amtrak, I thought, let’s eat them across the […]

Mother/Daughter Bonding in Washington DC

Mother/Daughter Bonding in Washington DC
October 29, 2015

In anticipation of my upcoming trip to Washington DC, I thought I’d take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about previous visits. There are too many places to visit in DC. Revisiting memories is helping me plan the next trip. Some places I want to see again. Others I’ve missed or don’t remember.   The First Trip If you’ve lived on the east side of the US, chances are you have visited Washington D.C. as an elementary or junior high student. I know I did. Sixth grade […]

10 Places to Eat Some Damn Good Pizza

10 Places to Eat Some Damn Good Pizza
September 24, 2015

Pizza is my thing! Ask me what I want to eat and I’ll usually respond with pizza or Italian food. Love it! I’m sure I have Italian genes somewhere. Right, Mom? When traveling, I will hunt down a pizzeria and hit it up at least once, if not more. This qualifies me as an expert, in my humble opinion.   Where to Go Pizza Hut – Everywhere Yeah I know, it’s a chain and lots of you will get turned off by this fact but damn, they […]

How to Do a Seward Pub Crawl

How to Do a Seward Pub Crawl
September 22, 2015

“What do you want to do today?” I asked my friend who was based in Seward, Alaska. She is an outdoorsy-type of person so I assumed she’d want to go hiking or somesuch like that, much to my non-hiking sensibilities. I was wrong!   How to Pub Crawl in Seward Start off with a delicious lunch at Chinooks Restaurant. Yes, I said lunch. We started this pub crawl early. Try their house special Chinook Burger topped with caramelized onions, bacon, and parmesan cheese and a load of […]

Birthday Celebration in Homer

Birthday Celebration in Homer
September 7, 2015

After cresting the hill, I gazed upon the beauty that is Homer. This small fishing town sits at the bottom of Kenai Peninsula in Alaska. It is surrounded by the bluish-green waters of Kachemak Bay. Homer is known as the Halibut Capital of the World or at least that is what their sign told me. Based on the numerous boats and pictures of fishermen hefting enormous halibut, I tend to agree. Initially, I did come here to fish. Nah, not really. I don’t fish but I was willing to […]

Minneapolis Mall of America – Part 3

Minneapolis Mall of America – Part 3
July 23, 2015

After a day of eating and drinking my way through downtown Minneapolis, it was time for something different. Shopping is not my favorite way to pass the time but a trip to Minneapolis would not be complete without a stop at Mall of America. It was a good rainy day to spend inside a mall.  I took the light rail which has a stop at the mall. There is an amusement park INSIDE the mall. Say what? I was told to “Think Happy” and I was. I love […]

Costs of Roatan

Costs of Roatan
July 12, 2015

Vacationing on Roatan, a Honduran island in the Caribbean, is not as inexpensive as one would think. Yes, Honduras is considered a third world country which usually translates to a more inexpensive place to travel. However, the island is not. Everything has to be imported. Transportation costs inflate the prices a lot. Regardless of the cost, would I visit Roatan again? Absolutely Yes! I spent the month of April 2015 on Roatan. Here’s what I spent. Food At the grocery store, American brand food is readily available but at […]

Minneapolis Dining Tour Part 2

Minneapolis Dining Tour Part 2
July 9, 2015

Sleeping in and lounging around in a large comfy hotel bed with a remote control, a large screen TV and cable was top priority on day two of my Minneapolis adventure. Not a very auspicious start to a short stay in a big city but it was exactly what I needed. At home in Chicago, I lived in someone’s apartment where I rented a room, a very small room that barely fit a twin bed. Ok, it was more like a closet than a bedroom. The idea of […]

Roatan Paya Bay Resort

Roatan Paya Bay Resort
July 7, 2015

Oh wow! Paya Bay Resort is out of this world. My stay at this fantastic resort was by accident. My friend and I were touring the east side of Roatan and happened upon the resort towards the end of our day. She begged and pleaded with me to stay and have a drink. I wanted to go home. I was tired and crabby after a day of sun, fun and driving on dirt roads. So glad she is persistent. Look what I would have missed out on.   […]

Bakeries are the Best: Chicago Version

Bakeries are the Best: Chicago Version
May 26, 2015

I have a weakness for baked goods. I like to make them. I like to shop for them. I LOVE to eat them. Hence, my non-size 6 figure. Chicago has some of the most incredible bakeries. During my two-year stay, I had the pleasure of eating at quite a few. My favorites: Sweet Mandy B’s This shop was my very first bakery discovery of the city. Actually, my friend guided me there and expounded upon the shop’s greatest. She was not wrong. Not only are the baked goods […]

Have You Heard of Northern Exposure?

Have You Heard of Northern Exposure?
May 24, 2015

Do you remember the show from the early 90s called Northern Exposure? It is widely thought that the show is based on the Alaskan town of Talkeetna. Apparently, the cast visited for a short period of time and disliked the remoteness of the town. Hence, the show’s filming was moved to the Lower 48 in Washington.   Personally, I think they missed out on some amazing opportunities. Talkeetna is exactly what I imagine a small Alaskan town should look like. It is quirky and colorful. The people are friendly and […]

Eating Portland

Eating Portland
May 10, 2015

Place: Portland. Food truck heaven. Enter my sister. The chef. You can imagine her foodie obsession. Her number one goal when visiting me in Portland was to eat her our way through the city with food trucks being top of the list.  Lets just say my sister’s food obsession really started at birth. Anyone who knows her knows this fact and loves her even more for it. (please don’t hate me from afar, sis. You know I’m your #1 fan) I’m pretty sure we gained at least 10 pounds […]

Random Roatan Information

Random Roatan Information
May 8, 2015

I find there are always random bits of information that you learn or wish you had learned about before an incident happens. Here are some of the things I’ve learned about Roatan: Banks   I always used Banco Atlantida’s ATM in Coxen Hole. The ATMs in West End and West Bay can be sketchy. I even tried the two ATMs next to the bank in the gas station right outside West End with no luck. Both ATMs said I had insufficient funds which caused me mild major panic until […]
