April #IGTravelChallenge

April #IGTravelChallenge
April 15, 2016

Welcome to the #IGTravelChallenge!   April’s Theme: April Showers Bring May Flowers   To be honest, I hate rain. Hate it! Ask anyone who knows me. I picked this theme because I wanted to see everyone else’s rain photos. Last month’s month-long challenge participants had some of the most amazing photos and stories. I know someone is going to blow me away with their mad photography skills. Why do I hate rain? It seems like it follows me. I didn’t always have this dislike of rain. Two years […]

100th Anniversary of the National Park Service

100th Anniversary of the National Park Service
January 24, 2016

Look who is turning 100! The National Park Service.     2016 marks the 100th anniversary of the park service creation. The service was created to preserve protected areas of wilderness and wildlife. There are 59 national parks in the United States and its territories.   There are many celebrations and projects planned to mark this special year. My favorite is The Greatest American Road Trip. You can follow Stefanie and Jonathan as they embark on an epic journey to visit each park including those located in American […]

Host a BaconFest Party

Host a BaconFest Party
January 3, 2016

Mmmmmm, bacon. One of my favorite food groups! It is a separate food group, right? Given this thought pattern shared between my sister and me, we thought, “Let’s host a BaconFest party.” I’ve been to parties based around food themes before such as Mexican or Italian foods but never one based solely on one ingredient.   The idea of a bacon-themed party started with BaconFest Chicago. When I moved to Chicago a few years ago, the festival was in its inaugural years. It has since grown to a […]

Photo Obsession: Alaskan Sunsets

Photo Obsession: Alaskan Sunsets
December 13, 2015

Alaska has the best sunsets I have ever had the pleasure of viewing. Maybe some day another part of the world will snag this title but for now Alaska wins hands down. It is very difficult to not have an obsession with snapping numerous photos of the gorgeous reds and pinks produced by midnight sunsets. What else has made my photo obsession list? Lizards, hummingbirds, and wildflowers to name a few.

Bacon Donut Challenge

Bacon Donut Challenge
November 23, 2015

Bacon with donuts! Say what? What a perfect combination. Usually, bacon donuts are paired with a maple glaze which makes them tasted like pancakes with maple syrup and a side of bacon, all in one mouthful. Only the donuts are even better. I first heard of bacon donuts when I lived in Chicago. I made it my mission to find and eat as many different varieties as possible. Since I was traveling from Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine via Amtrak, I thought, let’s eat them across the […]

Photo Obsession: Oregon Tulip Festival

Photo Obsession: Oregon Tulip Festival
November 8, 2015

Heading out on a cloudy overcast day, our destination was the Oregon Tulip Festival held at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm in Woodburn, Oregon. I was anxious to see the colorful beauty of the tulip farm. About 20 years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, California. I was sure the Oregon field would rival the California fields in beauty and I was right. The flowers did not disappoint. I wanted to take home so many. My favorites are the orange with […]

Mother/Daughter Bonding in Washington DC

Mother/Daughter Bonding in Washington DC
October 29, 2015

In anticipation of my upcoming trip to Washington DC, I thought I’d take a trip down memory lane and reminisce about previous visits. There are too many places to visit in DC. Revisiting memories is helping me plan the next trip. Some places I want to see again. Others I’ve missed or don’t remember.   The First Trip If you’ve lived on the east side of the US, chances are you have visited Washington D.C. as an elementary or junior high student. I know I did. Sixth grade […]

How to Get Paid to Visit Alaska
October 11, 2015

Alaska is an alluring place that many people dream about or have on their travel bucket list. Bucket lists include lots of dream destinations for most people; however, the best part about bucket lists is actually doing or achieving something on that list. Visit Nepal. Hike the Appalachian Trail. See the Northern Lights.   How to Achieve that Goal For me, my number one dream destination and my top of the bucket list item was Alaska. My initial goal was to work in Alaska as a teacher […]

Traveling as a Student Worker

Traveling as a Student Worker
October 7, 2015

I have been and always will be a question-asker. Sometimes you simply need to know stuff. This interview series will feature random travelers I meet that do not blog or write about their travels. They work or travel to unique places. I want to know why and what they recommend in order to follow their path. My goal is to show you how you can afford to visit exotic and alluring places without breaking the bank by sharing different ways to travel the world. Not all […]

Photo Obsession: Alaskan Fall Colors

Photo Obsession: Alaskan Fall Colors
October 4, 2015

Holy moly! Fall colors in the Lower 48 are astonishing until you see the Alaskan tundra change colors. Imagine all the color you normally see on the trees and picture it on the ground with the trees changing a brilliant yellow color. I will always have a soft spot for this state and the numerous natural wonders it produces. The fall season in Alaska is extremely short, three weeks at best but normally a two-week period depending on how far north you are. This year I started […]

Touring Jacobsen Salt Co.

Touring Jacobsen Salt Co.
September 30, 2015

Actually, that is a lie. We didn’t tour the Jacobsen’s facility. Instead, we visited the tasting room in Portland, Oregon. It was even better than only touring because we got to sample the product. Yeah! By we, I mean my sister, brother-in-law and me. It was so much fun!     I have a new appreciation for salt thanks to the very helpful and informative staff on hand for our visit. We were lucky enough to speak with several of the employees. The salt they harvest comes […]

10 Places to Eat Some Damn Good Pizza

10 Places to Eat Some Damn Good Pizza
September 24, 2015

Pizza is my thing! Ask me what I want to eat and I’ll usually respond with pizza or Italian food. Love it! I’m sure I have Italian genes somewhere. Right, Mom? When traveling, I will hunt down a pizzeria and hit it up at least once, if not more. This qualifies me as an expert, in my humble opinion.   Where to Go Pizza Hut – Everywhere Yeah I know, it’s a chain and lots of you will get turned off by this fact but damn, they […]
