I lucked out finding The Green Tortoise Hostel in downtown Seattle. It’s location is great. The hostel is right next to Pike Place Market. Not only was the location ideal for the downtown junkie in me, The Green Tortoise is a clean, well-lit, comfortable place to stay. The prices are a little high but not unreasonable for Seattle. In fact, it was one of the cheapest I could find. This was the first hostel I’ve stayed at that offered free breakfast everyday as well as free dinner three times a week. Breakfast included made to order pancakes and eggs in addition to assorted toasts and fruit AND free coffee and tea all day long. Woohoo! I love tea. I found it very convenient to have available without having to purchase a whole box of teabags.
I reserved a bunk in an 8-person mixed dorm room. Each bed had curtains which I found to be wonderful for privacy. I could change without having to go to the restroom. I could have my light on whenever without worrying about bothering anyone in the room. Under the bottom bunk of each bunk bed were lockable lockers for each tenant. The only thing I didn’t like about the room was the size. Extremely small. Did you know staying in a small room with 7 men equals a smelly room? Luckily the window opened.
Back to the common areas of the hostel. Each floor had several restrooms. All clean and decently sized with showers. Bring your own towel or rent one from the front desk which is manned almost 24 hours a day. Kitchen is large with lots of dishes and cookware available as well as a good-sized refrigerator. There are plenty of tables to sit around and work or chat. There is a room with computers and hookups. Interestingly enough, the hostel has a smoke room which is rather large with lots of tables and chairs. If you are a long-term traveler, the washer/dryer room will come in handy.
Best Features: location, location, location. Free breakfast. Friendly staff. Comfy beds with privacy.
Needs Improvement: honestly, I can’t think of any except maybe a lower price and notification of $20 cash deposit required upon check-in
